The Author

Zombiefreak a.k.a. Mike Browne has been a fan of the undead (and the all-the-way-dead for that matter) for many years and, having had some uniquely creepy experiences surrounding death and dying. Mike’s morbid curiosity came honestly. Growing up, his grandmother, Nanny, lived in a house owned by and next door to a funeral home where she sometimes answered the phones for death pick ups. Nanny’s house gave him the willies sometimes.

Also as a boy, Mike had a fascination for Egyptian funerary rites and mummification. As a result of that obsession and a wildly active imagination our young thanatophobe had persistent nightmares of mummies returning to life and shuffling relentlessly after him. He spent many a night sleeping with the lights on terrified of the mummies who surely awaited the darkness so they could pounce.

As Mike grew up he began to fervently watch horror movies and was specifically attracted to those of the zombie variety. The first viewing of George A Romero’s Night of the Living Dead as a teen set Mike on the path to becoming the zombie freak he is.

As well as working as a gravedigger for two years in his youth, Mike worked the graveyard shift in security at Vancouver Hospital where duties included patrolling the morgue as well as other creepy places on the campus including the abandoned nurses residence, the notoriously haunted burn unit and the subterranean tunnels connecting all of the buildings. Many a shift Mike’s imagination ran wild while walking through the dark. One particular night Mike had the misfortune of witnessing the death of a fellow security guard after a massive heart attack.

“Dealing with one’s fear of death is no small task,” Mike says. “My own mortality has clunked me on the head numerous times, so instead of pretending it’s not there I confront it every chance I get. If you surround yourself with what you’re afraid of it’s far easier to cope with when it finally comes for you as it inevitably does. For much of my life I’ve been overly terrified by the thought of my own death so being creative around it and learning as much as I can about the subject gives me some relief, but it has never left for good.”

Currently Mike is working in film in Vancouver, BC and developing his own projects, a number of which are unique zombie properties.

    For Immediate Release

Alter Ego Cinema’s critically-acclaimed, award-winning debut feature film, “Amateur Porn Star Killer”, will be available on DVD for a mere 10 dollar donation, from March until the last day of April.

The non-budget debut by multi-award-winning short filmmaker Shane Ryan and newcomer Michiko Jimenez has been receiving rave reviews, interviews and press for two years now (however, the movie was shot in just one night). Yet to find a distributor, Alter Ego Cinema is offering copies of their burnt DVD screeners in the mean time due to high demand, for a mere $10 donation. “APSK” has been praised by Film Threat, Polly Staffle, Cinema Crazed, Joe Horror, MvMMDI, Pretty-Scary, Lethal Death and Sex Gore Mutants, to name a few.

Also available, is the critically-acclaimed short film compilation “Big Boobs, Blonde Babes, Bad Blood” by Danielle Morgan and Shane Ryan. The compilation includes such shorts as the multi-award-winning debut short film “Isolation” (notable for its black and white cinematography) and “So, We Killed Our Parents” (named one of the Top 10 Shorts of 2004 by Film Threat).

And look out for the upcoming feature film “Romance Road Killers” by singer/songwriter Emily Wryn and Shane Ryan. The two have had their short film collaborations (“The Cleansing” and “Love Last Captured” - budgeted at just 10 bucks each) screen on the Independent Film Channel more than 20 times since last summer.

Hope anybody who reads this likes it! And incidentally, I’m adding a link to this site on my “links” page.
